Conditioning the mind..rather than fists

A Change of Heart

In order to enter fully into his Zen training, a certain samurai in medieval Japan had to leave the lord to whom he had sworn allegiance.  Such a change could have come only after a long inner struggle, for to desert one's duty was not permitted under the samurai ethical code.

But he did leave, and then trained as a Zen monk for the next ten years in a mountain monastery.  Thereafter, he set out on pilgrimage.  Unexpectedly, on his path the monk was recognized by another samurai on horseback, a man who was still serving his former lord.  The samurai drew his sword quickly and raised it high.  Then, deciding not to soil it by striking the monk, he spat contemptuously in the monk's face as he rode on by.

Wiping off the spittle, the monk realized how he would have reacted a decade earlier.  Such an insult could only have led to a fight to the death.  Deeply moved, he turned and bowed in gratitude toward that mountain monastery where he had received his Zen training.  He then composed the following poem:

The mountain is the same old mountain.
The Way is the same as of old.
    Truly what has changed
    Is my own heart.

Project Hope

Project Hope Helps 2.9 Mln Children Return to School

About 2.9 million Chinese school leavers have returned to class in the past 17 years with the help of a national program to help poor children in rural areas to continue their education.

Project Hope has set up 12,559 primary schools in the countryside since it opened its first in 1989 in east China's Anhui Province, said Gu Lan, an official with the fellowship center of the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF).

The CYDF launched Project Hope in 1989 to pool donations to help impoverished rural children to complete primary school education. Since its inauguration, Project Hope has received more than three billion yuan (US$3.75 billion) in donations.

The program also helps train teachers in rural areas, establish libraries for Project Hope primary schools and equip schools with computers, televisions and audio-visual equipment.

China faces serious challenges in providing universal education to its population of 1.3 billion and particularly to its rural population, despite steady progress in recent years.

In outlying mountain regions and areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, many children of needy families still cannot afford to go to school, and every year about one million pupils leave school to help support their families.

Project Hope has played an active role in promoting elementary education in China's rural areas, especially in economically-backward rural areas, said Gu.

what's for class today

"ZHENGZHOU, Henan Province, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Shaolin Kung Fu will be one of the compulsory classes in some Chinese middle schools in Henan Province, which boasts of the famed Shaolin Temple, local newspaper reported.

Starting from this autumn semester, middles schools in Dengfeng city will offer Shaolin Kung Fu in their PE classes, Henan Daily said.

"Dengfeng trained over 90 PE teachers in martial arts during summer vacation and the training finished on Sunday. Teachers hope that Kung Fu can arouse students interests in exercise," it said, adding that elementary schools will be included in the program soon.

Dengfeng, the birthplace of Shaolin Kung Fu, is dubbed homeland of the Chinese martial arts. There are more than 80 martial clubs and schools with about 50,000 students.

Dengfeng locates south to Song Mountain where there is the world-renowned Shaolin Temple. Enditem"
